Lighting Is Not Vanity. It’s Communication.

Let’s talk about lighting—because this one is a $30 fix that changes everything.
Natural light is everyone’s friend. It looks good on almost everyone. But when that light shifts—or disappears—you need a backup. That’s why I use a ring light every single day.
Most people don't realize this: A ring light fixes brightness. It also fixes color temperature!
When the light is too cold, you start to look tired. Sallow. Washed out. When it’s warmer, suddenly you look more vibrant, more alive, more engaged. Same face. Same person. Completely different perception.
This is not new. But it is more pertinent now that so many of our meeting are taking place over video calling platforms.

There’s a classic case I studied in journalism school from the Kennedy–Nixon debate. People who heard it on the radio thought Nixon won. People who watched it on television thought Kennedy won. Why? Visual presence. Kennedy was camera-ready and projected ease and vitality.
And I hear this question frequently: “Should I be worried about ageism?” It's pretty common for more experienced folks to also be sporting some silver hair (myself included!)
What I see in real life is this: The people getting hired quickly are the ones who look vibrant, relevant, engaged—like they’re excited to be here. You don't need to look younger. But you do need to claim your space.
Lighting helps your face communicate that before you ever say a word.
So, what can you do? Get a ring light if you don't have one. Notice that you can adjust the color as well as the brightness. Use the light even if you have natural light coming in. Use it to soften and fill the light and to generate a lighting tone that works with your skin tone. Warm light is generally better.
